Why Are Oil Changes Necessary?

The short answer to why oil changes are necessary is because oil is what protects and cleans a vehicle’s engine. Motor oil gets old and runs low over time, and without the proper amount and type of oil, an engine can be damaged in such a way that it can fail entirely or be very expensive to repair.

How Often Does a Vehicle Need an Oil Change?

There’s no one-size-fits-all for a vehicle’s maintenance schedule, including oil changes. To see how often your vehicle needs its oil changed, refer to your owner’s manual. Many vehicles have a system that will provide alerts when it’s time for an oil change and can act as a reminder. If you have any doubts about your vehicle’s needs, make sure to ask a professional that you can trust like the service technicians at Stanley CDJR of Brownwood. Here are a few factors that can determine your oil change schedule:
  • How many miles a vehicle has traveled since its last oil change
  • How long it’s been since its last oil change
  • Where and how you drive your vehicle

How Do I Change My Vehicle’s Oil?

Changing a vehicle’s oil can be a simple process, but it still needs to be done with extra care and attention to prevent harm to yourself or your vehicle. It’s important to take safety measures and practice caution during any vehicle maintenance or repairs. During a professional oil change, a technician will put on safety equipment and drive the vehicle onto ramps. Once the vehicle is in park and the emergency brake is on, they will find the drain plug. An oil pan will be placed down before the drain plug is removed. Then, they wait until the old oil is drained before replacing the drain plug.
The next step is to move the pan underneath the oil filter so that they can remove it and drain any oil that needs to be removed. If needed, they will install a new oil filter. To add the new oil, they will lift the hood, find and remove the engine oil cap, and place a funnel into the hole. Once the proper amount of new oil is added, they will replace the cap, close the hood, drive the vehicle off the ramps, and the process is complete.
